News From Home: Ebola Update, Lecturers' Deal and a Stadium Date
Habari, family. Three items from home are worth a careful read this week: an Ebola snapshot, a lecturers’ deal that is not signed yet, and a stadium date.
Ebola: nine cases, still one cluster
As of October 26, Kenya had nine confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases and two deaths. All nine were in one connected group tied to the first imported case. There was no evidence the virus had spread in the community (WHO Africa).
That same day, 20 contacts of the first case finished 21 days in quarantine with no symptoms and were released. Another 98 contacts were still in quarantine (WHO Africa).
These numbers move. Treat them as a snapshot from October 26, not a live total.
The Ministry of Health’s notice on the first imported case points people to the toll-free 719 line for health information (Ministry of Health).
Kenya News Agency had already reported the second death on October 24, with nine confirmed cases in that one cluster and no sign of community spread (Kenya News Agency).
What it means for travel to and from Canada
Canada’s Ebola border measures run until November 27, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. They cover the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. Kenya is not on that list (Public Health Agency of Canada).
What that page says for travellers:
- Transit counts, including a change of planes or refuelling. There is no exemption for that (border measures). For example, a connection through Entebbe counts, because Entebbe is in Uganda.
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents who were in any of those countries in the past 21 days are allowed to enter. They have to quarantine for 21 days unless they are exempt (border measures).
- Other travellers face different rules on that same page. Read your own category there (border measures).
- A separate IRCC notice extends temporary immigration measures to November 27, 2026 for people whose last country of residence was the DRC, Uganda or South Sudan (IRCC notice).
Check the border-measures page again before you book a ticket. The measures can change. This section reports official border rules. It is not medical advice.
If you are flying on to Thunder Bay, our flying and arriving guide covers the connection into YQT.
Lecturers: announced, not signed yet
On October 28, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the government announced a KSh 20 billion deal to end the public-university lecturers’ strike. Kenyans.co.ke reported it as a verbal agreement, with formal signing expected on Friday, October 30 (Kenyans.co.ke).
The Star reported that the union expected to call off the strike on Friday at 3 p.m., once the terms were written down. It also said classes were expected back on Monday (The Star).
Kenyans.co.ke dated that Monday as November 2, 2026 (Kenyans.co.ke).
That signing had not happened yet when this note was written. Treat the return to class as announced and expected, not as a completed fact.
A January 5, 2027 stadium date
President Ruto has announced that the Raila Odinga International Stadium, at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, will open with Bayern Munich against Ajax. The Star reported the date as January 5, 2027, and said both clubs had confirmed the match (The Star).
